I hike along muddy riverbeds in the Fall and Spring, and trudge through slushy street corner puddles in the Winter, so I wanted something water resistant, a bit higher on the ankle, flexible enough for hiking, has some protection as a work book, dark enough for an office shoe yet fashionable at a casual dress social. Out of the box this shoe was not comfortable with a flat insert and relatively narrow arch (even though I went a half size larger), however once I added a good orthodic like Sof Sole Men's Airr Orthotic Performance Insole that really made a big difference because the insert raised my foot into the wider comfort sweet spot of this shoe. This boot did keep my feet warmer than a typical shoe, but not hot enough to perspire. If you do over 5 mile hikes, you really should pick a shoe at a store mainly for comfort, especially if you are carrying a pack. Comfort'wise this shoe may not be your first choice, but for me; the wide range of things I can do with this one affordable shoe made it worth my while.
