I read in boat forums that if you disconnect the cable from the rear of the boat and the steering is still stiff, more then likely your cable needs replaced. I did just that and the steering was stiff. On the cable about 4 feet from the steering wheel was the old product number, I searched for that on Amazon and bought the exact cable. It took me about 40 minutes to put it all back together and the steering works perfect.
