Our 5 year old got this as a Christmas present and got up within 5 minutes of starting (you really need no more than a fast idle). As his confidence grew he could slide it around and carve turns to spray a friend on a kneeboard. Compared to the inflatable style, this may seem a little more effort but even 8 year old kids able to ski still wanted to have a turn, where they would have been over the jet-ski style quickly.

A tip is for an adult to hold the rope and keep it short for starting so you can give an extra pull to get them up quickly, then just feed it out to the length they are comfortable with once under-way.
