Cleveland Golf Men's 290 Classic Driver (Right Hand, Stiff Flex, 10.5 Degree) Review
I know what you're thinking, 7.5 deg is for long drive guys only. I figured the same. My swing speed has increased from mid 90s to 105-110 in the past year and my very nice titleist 910 d2 9.5deg was launching high and no rollout. With a solid hit and perfect swing for me, I could get it 270.I work w a pro at golftec and always check my driver numbers on the monitor. My launch and spin seemed fine. They had this Cleveland in the room and I thought I'd give it a go. I was warmed up from the lesson and gave it a rip. it was a mishit over swing and it faded and still went 285! I caught the next one flush and saw it 302!! The magical 300 number that I'd never reached. Now, granted that was with 40 yards of rollout courtesy of the low spin. But we're still talking 260 carry and straight. Needless to say I grabbed the demo and headed to my club to hit a bunch of drives on different holes. I found myself 15-20 yards farther, with a bit of a fade but no big slices. It didn't feel as solid as my titlest but rolled out and our club has kikuyu grass, which doesn't roll much at all.
Since then I've played several rounds and am happy to say the beast isn't wild at all. My swing speed on radar has increased 5mph and my out of my shoes swing speed has gone from 111mph to 123! Not that I hit the ball with that swing but it does show absolute speed is faster with a lighter club. I'm a big strong guy but don't feel this is a floppy featherweight club at all. In fact, due to the light head, the shaft balances out and the swing weight is D2. That's impressive for a club that weighs so much less.
I just bought it now on amazon and think I may buy the 9 as well. I'm reaching par 5s in two now and having 9's and PWs into greens which was more rare before. I pretty much hit it straight or on occasion a slight draw or fade. It is not a "wild" driver at all.
Btw, the taylormade is just so hyped. I can't believe this club is a mere $200!! Wow.
