If you are reading this review you've probably considered Salewa's Alpine Trainer as well as this Mountain Trainer. I have tried both and although they look a lot alike they fit much differently. If you have a narrow foot go with the Alpine. If you have feet like mine, wide across the forefoot with a narrow heel, go with the Mountain. I have tried on at least a dozen hikers over the past year and these fit my foot better than the rest. Usually I have to go with a wide width then find the heel is too wide for me which leads to heel slip.

Although I bought these for hiking I may use them primarily as a casual shoe. Why? Most places I hike have rough trails and although the sole of this shoe is stiff enough the heel of the outsole is quite narrow. It measures just under 3", the narrowest of any shoe or boot I've seen for hiking. Their Mountain Trainer boot has a heel more than a quarter of an inch wider while most heels in a 12 are 3 1/2". Also, the two layer insoles are more of a gimmick than useful. For these reasons I give it four stars.
