I'm getting older, and no longer enjoy a hard foul back onto a normal catcher's-style protector. This hard-shell protector seems invulnerable (which doesn't help the unprotected parts of me one bit, but that's life). It buckles easily with straps that connect in front, where you can see them rather than having to grope for them. The downside is that it's bulky, and you're clearly wearing a protector under your shirt, which is a look some plate umps hate. Me, I don't care, so I'm happy with this unit and glad I paid the additional bucks for it. The waist skirt is detachable, and I don't know what it's for, since it won't fit under a shirt unless you're 6'6". I'm 5'9" and I'm not sure what folks around 6' would do vis-a-vis the skirt.
