Exped SynMat Basic 7.5 Sleeping Pad, Terracotta, Regular Review

I pretty much like everything about this pad.

- It rolls up small because it's not "self inflating" material
- It has a muted but pleasant color
- It offers a lot of padding so you can adjust your comfort level and provides warmth in winter conditions
- It's full length so my feet aren't hanging off the end
- The valves are easy to use
- It's lighter than other equivalents

I have only used the "self inflating" Thermarest pads until I looked at this at an REI. They didn't have the full size in stock and couldn't guarantee they could get it in time for a Mt. Whitney ascent which was surprising so I ordered it on Amazon along with the Medium Exped pillow. I haven't had a beef with Thermarest and they served their purpose well but I did find I had to blow them up pretty full to get any comfort because they are thinner and that also made them somewhat stiff. I wasn't as comfortable on uneven surfaces as I would have liked and really slid off them when I was on sloped surfaces because they are smooth topped. They also aren't really "self inflating" but only partially self inflating. You still need to blow them up. It just saves you some time but this makes them bulkier and somewhat heavier.

The Exped has a ridged structure with tall padding so I can adjust the comfort level and because it's ridged I don't slide as easily when the ground is sloped from side to side. My limbs get caught between the ridges so I don't go moving in on my climbing partner's side of the tent.

I used this in combination with the Thermarest Z Lite closed foam pad as I was on snow or cold rock on Mt. Whitney and the combo was really warm and much more comfortable than my other self inflating Thermarest. I did end up sliding slightly on uneven ground but not hardly as much as on my Thermarest. Along with my Marmot Col EQ -20F bag I was toasty and comfortable.

I read one review where they harped on the fact that it's a welded seam between the ridges and not truly connected which makes it feel like you're floating but I have no clue what they're talking about. This was super comfortable to me and I didn't get any "floating" feeling. Maybe I haven't used one of those super cush pads but this was great for me.

The only minus is the time it takes to blow it up which to me seems much more than the Thermarest I have. It only takes a minute or minute and a half as they say but it does seem like a fairly long time in reality. I guess it's only minor though unless you're on an expedition moving from one camp to another each day acclimatizing. Plus it wasn't so bad even at altitude when I thought shortness of breath may be a factor due to thinner air. Makes me want to buy the pillow pump but that's an extra piece to haul around and after looking at it in an REI it doesn't seem to be that comfortable as a pillow. Minor issue but it knocks the rating down to about a 4.7 star for me.
