Product Description
Safariland's model 6360 is a distinctive design that features their Automatic Locking System (ALS). Model 6280 is the base for this holster design as it utilizes the unique SLS rotating hood design for a smoother single motion draw and greater protection against attempted weapon takeaways. The 6360 is classified as a Level III Retention holster with the SLS as the primary security system; it also includes an internal locking device that retains the weapon in all directions when the primary device is open. This holster's design offers three distinct design differences from previous models. First, once the weapon is holstered, it "locks" it into place, providing an extra measure of security from standard Level II retention holsters. Second, the holsteris completely operable with the thumb, makingit very instinctive to use.. Finally, once the retetion devices are released, the weapon can be drawn straight out of the holster with no twisting or other motion required. The 6360 features a tensioning devce, molded sight track and SafariSuede lining to protect the gun 's sights and finish. Its wraparound construction and SafariLaminate Structure provide the strongest design combination available. The rigid UBL (Universal belt Loop) anchors the holster and stabilizes it on your belt with hardened aerospace fasteners. I really wanted to like this holster. I watched several videos of this showing how easy it is to draw while providing level III retention. That's true on nice cool days. When I got the holster I started working to develop muscle memory on the draw procedure and was really liking it. It will take several hundred draws, perhaps even thousands of draws, to develop reliable muscle memory that will allow you to draw without thinking under stress. That's OK. It takes work and practice to carry safely. That's the good part.
There are two levers/buttons required to release the gun from the holster. The first lever moves the loop from over the back hammer area. This release has a plastic button with serrations that give you some hope (but probably not much) of operating the lever with wet or bleeding hands. The problem is the lever inside that finally releases the gun. You operate the first lever and use the same thumb to move to the second.
The second lever does not have serrations. In fact, its worse. It's very smooth plastic without any texture at all - nearly polished in texture. You have to pull this back firmly with your thumb. It's not easy and takes practice in good conditions. I don't think you'll ever operate this with a wet thumb (and I wet my thumb to test it). Think sweat from stress, rain, perhaps even blood from injury or battle. If it's on your thumb you can't draw your weapon using this holster.
All that would have been required would have been to have serrations on this inner button like on the loop button. Without serrations, this holster is not reliable enough for defensive carry.
As much as I wanted this to work out, it's going in the cabinet and I'll keep looking for a retention holster that is safe to carry and can still operate under adverse conditions.
Edit: I really do want to like this holster so it never made it into the cabinet. I keep it out and wear it when I can and I spend an hour or so a week doing drills with it. I can draw pretty cleanly with clean, dry, hands - nearly as fast as a holster with no retention mechanism. When I try to draw with my thumb wet, and especially with anything slick, it still remains quite difficult, requiring that I slow down, focus very closely, and over exaggerate my motions to release the gun. I'll try drilling with that over-exaggerated motion and see if I can make it easier. If I can, I'll bump the rating another notch.
