I like Helly Hansen gear. Generally I've found that they make a good quality lasting product that wears well with active use. This Warm Verglas Hybrid top is an interesting baselayer. It is made with a Merino wool outer layer, with an inner layer and panels made of Helly Hansen's proprietary Lifa fabric (I think this is some acrylic blend). The Lifa panels are on the back of the sleeves, on the centre back panel, and armpits. The interal fabric is the waffle type that Helly Hansen tend to use in their Dry clothing series. This waffle pattern is meant to aid in air circulation, especially for these areas that tend to get sweatiest.
The small that I ordered weighs in at about 220grams (7.8oz) so is comparable in weight to an Icebreaker branded 200 series baselayer top. The Warm Verglas Hybrid top is advertised with a "Fabric weight 215g/m2", but I found it not as warm as an Icebreaker 200g/m2 Merino wool top (possibly due to the lower wool content of the Helly Hansen top).
Likes:
- Merino wool outer layer - although it would have been nice to have the merino layer on the inside. I haven't worn it enough for a smell test (like I have with other merino active baselayers).
- The fit seems true to size, and while it is an "active" close fitting style, it isn't too snug.
- The length is nice, long enough so it doesn't ride up at the back if you are riding a bike.
- The thumb loops are a generous size so they don't feel constrictive, and the sleeve cuffs are a slightly stretchy material so you can fold them back if you don't use the thumb loops.
Dislikes:
- The neck is the tallest I've ever had in a baselayer. Good if you have a really long neck! It can be folded down if fully zipped up, otherwise the collar doesn't stay up to warm the back of the neck - it opens like a shirt collar if unzippped.
Overall, a nice baselayer that could be used as by itself if it's not that cold.
