The sweater is based on the original issued to the crews of HM Submarines and adopted, due to its immense utility, by many officers and men serving in other branches of Royal Navy during WW2 and the immediate post-war period. Compared to Orvis' copy, the RN original was made of wool, with a significantly longer and more tightly woven neck tube, and longer waist and wrist ribbing. The wool was fairly coarse and "scratchy" but, after a few washings, became softer and less irritating. It also changed colour from a very light ivory to pure white.

The Orvis ivory version is true to size, and offers a fairly decent copy of the RN rollie (from "roll neck," which is how this type of sweater is called on the other side of Atlantic.) However, the sweater is made of cotton instead of wool. Also, compared to the original, it is bulkier, with roomier chest, and feels softer when "out of the box" and donned for the first time. The quality of knit is high, and I believe that parting of the yarn in the underarm seam a week after the sweater arrived was that resulted in a nasty hole was an unforftunate exception. I did not bother to ask for a replacement, and although the repair was quite complicated, there is no trace of the damage; the sweater resists even the most punishing routines very well.

The Orvis rollie is a rather pricey affair considering the material it is made of. On the other hand, it is warm, comfortable, and can be worn either alone or under a blazer. Jeans or "formal" trousers fit to it equally well. It also goes perfectly under either a duffle or pea coat, and the relatively tight ribbing of the neck, waist and wrists protects against incursions of cold air. Altogether, the sweater serves quite well in the role intended for the original: to protect its user from the vagaries of weather that could be quite mean on the exposed casing of a submarine or the open bridge of a WW2 destroyer.

Despite its colour and general appearance, the sweater is NOT, as at times claimed, the recreation of the "frock" worn by the pilots of RAF. The latter had a much wider and shorter neck that allowed free movement of head, and was substantially longer (mid-thigh). It was, just like the RN sweater, created for the specific needs of the user, i.e., a fighter pilot working in a tight and often very cold cockpit.
