Product Description
Dive headlong into the clipless world with the Shimano SH-M087G Shoes buckled firmly to your feet. The M087G features a synthetic leather rand mesh upper for three-season comfort, and a molded rubber outsole for excellent grip in almost all conditions. A combination of traditional hook-and-loop straps and Shimano's Micro-Adjust buckle let you dial in the fit and support you need. Reflective hits on the heel keep you visible to motorists, and two-hole cleat compatibility gives you a wide range of pedal options.Shimano SH-M087G Shoes Gray, 44.0 - Men's Review
I came from the M086 shoe, which is basically the previous year's iteration with a black/white color pattern. I wore those shoes for 1.5 years and THRASHED them 3-4 times per week over rough terrain until the bottom started ripping of near the cleat. Not a great way for a shoe to go, but not bad either. This shoe is a tad lighter and the casing is far more comfortable. I bought the exact same size as the M086, but unlike the M086, this shoe did not need any "break-in" time. It fit like a glove. It feels like the leather is softer and more flexy where you need it, all around the sides of the front foot (I have wide feet). Only the tip is stiff, so it feels amazing and you dont notice the stiffness other than the shoe having zero flex when you pedal. Silver color looks good.
My only gripe that keeps this from a 5 star: Tongue design.
The top CENTER of the tongue is a fabric, unlike the leather, that makes it nice and pliable so it doesn't dig into the top of your foot where your ankle stops and you leg starts. Well, that's great... but the SIDES of the top of the tongue (imagine a "U" shape with the fabric in the middle) are a bit thicker to accommodate the stitching of the fabric middle as well as its own leather. The result is a SLIGHTLY thicker side edge of the tongue, about 1cm wide.
This usually would not be a problem... but, it lines up perfectly with one of the harder parts of the top bucks. In the end, there is a dime-sized pressure point at the top of your foot, interior side, just below the top.
I'm finicky, I guess. My first ride was a LONG race in these and they performed admirably. I did not get a blister on this spot, and only noticed it when I was walking around. When I put the shoes on again the next day, I could definitely feel the soreness in that one spot, though.
In the end, I'd buy the same shoes again in a heartbeat. Maybe my feet are shaped weird... or maybe they will break in (only 2 rides so far).
OTHERWISE: light, stiff, good-looking, COMFORTABLE, great buckle, etc.
UPDATE: The stiff upper-tongue section that I was complaining about has broken in nicely over 2 months of riding. For the last month I have stopped noticing it. The shoes have been outstanding thus far. (changing rating to 5/5 from 4/5)
