Icom HM-157B CommandMic Remote Marine Microphone (Black) Review

I just purchased a Catalina 320, which came with an Icom VHF M-402 base station in the salon, and a remote handset that plugs in to the nav station at the wheel in the cockpit. The model of Icom handset that came with the boat was an HM-127, which is no longer manufactured. Its compatible replacement is the HM-157. When I bought the boat, I could not get the handset to work and figured it was broken. So, I ordered this HM-157 as a replacement. However when I tried it on the boat, it didn't work either (!) or so I thought.

So I started searching on the web for hints on what might be wrong. I found an obscure Technical Bulletin from Icom (which is not referenced anywhere in the manual for the new handset), which instructs users that the handset must be plugged in BEFORE turning on the base station, otherwise the handset will not function.

That was the problem, for me. I tried the old and the new handset and voila, both worked great. So I'm returning this HM-157, which looks like a great product, but thought I'd add this information in the review in the event someone is not able to get their old or new Icom remote handset to work
