Aero Jacket will make it so that you no longer need to choose between one or the other form of protection. The Aero Jacket is a highly technical wind jacket with full stretch to eliminate that noisy flapping effect which accompanies a normal wind breaker. But since it is made from the Pearl Izumi P.R.O. Softshell Lite material, it also provides not only amazing protection against rainy weather, but is supremely easy to stuff into your jersey pocket. You may suspect that a jacket which effectively protects you from the wind and rain will also become much too hot and moist on the inside. Fear not, the Aero Jacket will surprise you pleasantly on that score. Direct-Vent panels have been built into the jacket to make sure that any heat buildup can escape quickly. The full length zipper comes with the Pearl Izumi draft flap and zipper garage so that the cold winds will not penetrate through to your under-layers. It also includes a nicely tapered collar which will give the back of your neck a touch more protection while freeing up the space directly below your chin. With your safety in mind, they have included multiple reflective elements to keep you visible even after dusk. The Pearl Izumi P.R.O. The PRO Aero jacket is an extremely thin, stretchy, wind-RESISTENT jacket. Good for weather above 45F degree with appropriate layering.

Purpose: I wanted a a packable jacket to block the wind, remain breathable, and look good (I wasn't concerned with the water protection since I will not ride my tri bike in the rain). I found myself overheating in 50-60F degree weather with my thermal jersey but too chilly with a just a short sleeve jersey and thin long sleeve jersey combo. I contemplated arm warmers, but found that the weather really wasn't warming up enough to justify shedding them and exposing bare arms. Therefore, I searched for a jacket that cut the wind, trapped the warmth, and still remained breathable for the entire ride... I found the PRO Aero.

Fit: I am 5'11", 160lb athletic build man and the medium size fits me like a glove. I have never had a sizing issue with Pearl Izumi apparel... if I am a medium in one thing, I am a medium in everything else Pearl makes. With that being said, there is still ample room to layer with this jacket. The sleeves are plenty long enough, the tail is a great length, and the front rides you just at the waist. Note that there is NO rubber/sticky band on the inside bottom of the jacket to prevent it from riding up on you though.

Function: I cannot stress enough that this is a lightweight jacket that must be used in a layering system as the final piece. It is NOT designed to MAKE you warm, but rather to KEEP you warm. Pearl Izumi's Softshell technology is incredible. The material is super stretchy and feels great to the touch. Many reviewers note that this jacket is not a superior water resistant piece, and unfortunately I believe them. I have not had a "wet" experience with this jacket but will say that if you hold this jacket up to a sunny sky you can see through it. After missing my mouth with the water bottle I can say that it does bead up and repel small amounts of water 100%. In terms of wind resistance, this is where I give it four stars. With an msrp of $125 I really wish this jacket was fully windproof. I understand that Pearl's product description states that the PRO Aero Softshell fabric "provides optimal wind protection" but I am just disappointed that it's not windproof. For example, the Pearl Izumi Elite Barrier jacket has an msrp of $90 and boasts that it's full windproof. Granted, the Elite Barrier is not a form fitting, stretchy Softshell fabric, but it is a cheaper version of a lightweight, windproof jacket. As a final note, the product description tag on the PRO Aero says it's 4.5 of 5 stars for wind protection and 4 of 5 for ventilation. In terms of ventilation, there are nice mesh air holes under each arm pit that helps regulate body heat.

Overall: I find that this jacket is a great alternative to arm warmers in 50F degree weather. It is a jacket that stays on during the entire ride while remaining breathable and cutting down on the wind chill. Pearl makes some of the most stylish biking apparel on the market and this jacket is another testament to that. I feel this jacket will also make a great addition to my running wardrobe.

Update after 2 rides:

Road ride: 44F degrees with wind chill of 38F degrees. I layered with a Pearl short sleeve jersey, Pearl Elite Thermal long sleeve jersey, and the PRO Aero jacket. My arms were chilly the entire ride due to the wind. My core was warm and regulated. I think I pushed the cold weather limits of this jacket with the layering described above. On a side note, the jacket is definitely stretchable enough to accommodate multiple layers and still feel great.

Mountain bike ride: 47F warming to 55F degrees in about 2 hours. I layered a Pearl Transfer Lite long sleeve piece under a regular Pearl short sleeve jersey, then the PRO Aero. Perfect combo!!! Building much more body heat while mtb, this jacket really shined. It kept in the warm while blocking the wind. The constant 20mph wind on my previous road ride really began to penetrate the PRO Aero, yet at the slower speeds on the mtb it blocked the wind nicely. I stayed extremely comfortable the entire ride. I was actually surprised to find that my 2 under layers were decently soaked with perspiration because the PRO Aero did a great job of keeping me regulated.
